Happy New Release Tuesday! It’s the birthday for a lot of great books today – what are you taking home? I preordered several of these and will be stopping by my local indie bookstore to grab a few others!
Hang the Moon by Jeanette Walls – Sally Kincaid is a fearless woman, much like her father. But when her fearless ways result in her brother’s accident, she’s exiled from the family. Years have passed and Sally wants to take her place back in the family, but it won’t be easy. Set against the turn of the century prohibition, this novel brings historical events and even some southern lore to life.
Ringmaster by Abraham Riesman – If you’ve watched any kind of TV wrestling in the past 3 decades, you know the name Vince McMahon. But do you know the man behind the public persona? This unauthorized biography of the media mogul tracks his life from his humble upbringing to his rise to stardom. It also includes the relationships McMahon cultivated with political figures and foreign governments. I have to admit – I’m a bit skeptical on this one as the publisher’s blurb includes the phrase “understanding the contemporary American apocalypse”.
How Not to Kill Yourself by Clancy Martin – “the desire to kill oneself is almost always temporary and avoidable”…this is an interesting personal account of battling mental illness and self-destruction throughout the author’s life. With nearly a dozen suicide attempts, Martin can give first hand accounts of what propelled him towards these feelings and what he has done to avoid them in the future. Warning: this book is NOT for everyone. Also, if you are currently battling suicidal thoughts, please don’t just pick up this book – call the National Mental Health Hotline by dialing 988 if you are in the US.
Loyalty by Lisa Scottoline – this author is known for her thrillers, and Loyalty will be no different! Set on the island of Sicily just as the mafia was rising to power, this novel promises “an epic tale of good versus evil”. The story will deliver historical fiction, thriller elements, and romance.
A House With Good Bones by T. Kingfisher – I say this all the time – thrillers and horror and fantasy are not my typical cup of tea. I can’t say I will be reading this one myself, but it is definitely making waves in my book groups. A Southern Gothic novel following a family in North Carolina as the adult daughter investigates mysterious happenings around her mother’s home including a jar full of teeth and vultures circling above.
Humanly Possible by Sarah Bakewell – What does it mean to be human? Bakewell explores 700 years of famous lives in her quest for this answer. The book has one central theme across the timeline and all the people: care for one another as we are all just human.
On The Line by Fern Michaels – this is starting to feel more like Halloween with all the thrillers on the list today! A start NYC chef is a favorite in a TV cooking show. It’s been a great rise to the top…until he falls to the floor of his kitchen and nearly bleeds to death. Medical tests and questions ensue, but is it his own family’s history that is killing him…
The Scandalous Ladies of London: The Countess by Sophie Jordan – have you read all the Bridgerton books? Then this is the next series for you! What is high society without scandal? Jordan’s tale of debutants and courtiers starts her new series that follows a wealth of scandalous women of the ton!
Kids’ Books releasing today
Dog Man: Twenty Thousand Fleas Under the Sea (Dogman #11) by Dav Pilkey – Dog Man is a favorite in our house! This latest adventure has everyone’s favorite super pets fighting to save the city once again! From the creator of Captain Underpants, this graphic novel is a great read for middle grades!
Don’t Touch That Flower by Alice Hemming and Nicola Slater – Now that we’re in Spring, it’s time to refresh our bookshelves with some great seasonal books for our youngest readers! When Squirrel becomes protective of a brand new spring flower, Bird shows him what’s important for his flowers to grow. This educational picture book is great for little hands to learn about nature before maybe planting some flowers of their own!
How to Catch a Garden Fairy by Alice Walstead and Andy Elkerton – this is not the first time we’ve featured a “How to Catch” book on the blog! These are some cute and fun reads for any kid. It includes very creative “traps” that introduce STEAM concepts and pulls in several other friends from this series!
Love Makes A Garden Grow by Taeeun Yoo – this book speaks to my soul – a child helps her grandfather in his garden. Grandfather teaches her how to care for plants and love nature the way he does. He even gives her one of her own. These lessons will stay with her the rest of her life, much like the lessons my own Poppy taught me while growing up in his garden.
The World and Everything In It by Kevin Henkes – this beautiful picture book is from a Caldecott Medal winner, and Caldecott honoree. Henkes shows children the wonders of the world from the pages of a book, creating self awareness and helps with development of social and emotional skills. This is a great book to help open discussions about the world with your tiny readers, too!
