New Release Tuesday – 2/21/23

TGIT! Thank Goodness It’s Tuesday might not be exactly what you were expecting this morning, but it’s New Release Tuesday and I’m excited about the new books! By the way…I’m traveling today, but I’ll be picking up my new reads through my Bookshop.org page to support my favorite local indie shop!

Comedy Comedy Comedy Drama by Bob Odenkirk (paperback version) – This one has been on the market for a while, but the new paperback version is out for sale today and it’s worth listing it here. It’s a NYT Best Seller and full of details of Odenkirk’s rise to the star of shows like Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad.

The Last Kingdom by Steve Berry – in this latest Cotton Malone novel, a king has been searching for a new land to rule. The king supposedly drowns, but did he find what he was looking for before his death? Major world powers worldwide thing he did and are fighting for the kind’s legacy.

I Have Some Questions For You by Rebecca Makkai – this psychological thriller from the Pulitzer Prize winner is a full on head-game. An investigative mystery looking into the collective memory of the community. A murder years before, a school full of people who all believe the same story, and a lot of questions starting to develop about what actually happened. I’m not much from thrillers, but this one sounds very intriguing.

Oscar Wars by Michael Shulman – When the first Oscars ceremony was held in 1929, movie stars were treated like American royalty. And royals like to battle. This new book details the wars between the stars, the movie production companies, and all the unknowns behind the biggest hits. While some of these stories are well known, the author promises to reveal many stories unknown to the public.

The Porcelain Moon by Janie Chang – Towards the end of the first World War, two women cross paths in the French countryside. One is a Chinese laborer running from an arranged marriage, the other a French woman running from an abusive relationship. This historical fiction is set against true facts of forced labor and the aftermath of war – it’s high on my TBR list now!

Artfully Yours by Joanna Lowell – With a cover that looks like a poster for the Bridgerton series, this Victorian romance is full of mystery, too. An art forger, a baker, and an art critic cross paths over a long list of fake paintings. Will the truth come out?

What My Bones Know by Stephanie Foo – the author is an award-winning producer, but found herself suffering debilitating panic attacks, even at the height of her career. The world of complex PTSD is just now being investigated and documented. CPTSD comes from years of repeated exposure to trauma and Foo presents an intimate account of her own trauma and what she’s learned from it. As a CPTSD patient myself, I am looking forward to reading this memoir solely for the shared sisterhood with this writer.

Best Served Hot by Amanda Elliot – this foodie-centric romance promises a lighthearted look at the world of food critics and high profile restaurants. In this opposites attract comedy, two food critics argue about the use of social media in their work and compete for the top spot among their peers.

The Woman With The Cure by Lynn Cullen – this historical fiction is from the bestselling author of Mrs. Poe. Capturing the real life details around the creation of the Polio vaccine in the 1940’s and 50’s. As with many early scientific discoveries, one man was given credit when the discovery was the work of an entire team of people, but most specifically, a woman.

Kids’ Books releasing today

The Bright Side by Chad Otis – I love children’s books which help us have discussions with our kids about hard topics. This picture book talks about the unhoused through the life of a family living in an abandoned school bus with little to eat. It’s based on Otis’ own childhood and shows how to be compassionate to those we meet in similar circumstances.

The Rainbow Snail by Karin Akesson – This cute picture book follows the snail from the blackest of black surroundings to the most colorful rainbow of experiences. It’s an interactive book and an easy read along for the tiniest of readers. This would make a great baby gift for the expecting parents in your life!

Whale Done by Stuart Gibbs – For the middle grade readers, this chapter book is the latest installment in the FunJungle series. A cute mystery who-done-it, this will keep the kids interested and would make a great read-aloud for slightly younger kids – parents will find this fun, too!

The Best Worst Day Ever by Mark Batterson, Summer Batterson Dailey, and Benedetta Capriotti – A book about what appears to be the worst day in a little boy’s life will help you talk with your kids about controlling how we respond when things we cannot control happen to us. Mark Batterson has been a favorite of mine since I read his book The Circle Maker when our family was praying for a baby. He has a way of pulling Biblical facts into everyday situations and making hard topics relatable.

Lasagna Means I Love You by Kate O’Shaughnessy – I fully believe that you can’t nurish the mind or the soul until you nurish the body, and that means food! Mo is a little girl who has lost all the family she’s ever known and is now in foster care. She’s working to build a website full of recipes and the stories behind them from all the families she encounters. While food is comfort and love, what Mo really wants is a family.

Goodnight Love by Sumi Loundon Kim and Laura Watkins – A picture book full of beautiful images, this book is the perfect nighttime read with your younger kids. If you have an overactive little one, this story full of guided meditation will help to calm their minds and their bodies and ready for slumber!
