We all have moments that define our lives – the moment we meet someone, or the moment something tremendous happens. May 21, 2008 was one of those moments for the entire Chapman family – a tragic accident that lead to the death of their youngest child. But there were so many others along the way, too – the moment Steven and Mary Beth would meet, the moment Steven received his first recording contract, the moment Mary Beth released her book. Steven released his own book, Between Heaven & the Real World in 2017, recounting each of these moments along with many more like the adoptions of their three youngest children and the weddings of the three eldest. It also recounts the very real and relatable struggles the Chapmans encountered in their marriage along the way.
Known worldwide for songs like “Cinderella” and “The Great Adventure”, Steven Curtis Chapman has been entertaining crowds and ministering to people for decades. I first heard the name Steven Curtis Chapman when I was in college. My classmates and I would gather in the Union lunchroom in the afternoons to play games, fellowship, and listen to our local Christian radio station. Chapman’s music was so popular and we knew every word. Reading this memoir and the mentions of Chapman’s fellow recording artists and speakers brings back many memories of that time!
I give Between Heaven & the Real World 5 out of 5 stars. One thing I have always appreciated about Steven Curtis Chapman is his humility and approachability. This memoir is no different – the stories he captures in his writing show vulnerability and a heart that is focused on his love for God. While centered around his faith, Chapman’s writing does not force Christianity forward in an abrasive way.
I recommend this memoir for Christian readers looking to learn more about the artist’s backstory. I would also recommend this for couples who are struggling in their marriage and those struggling with depression. With discussions about faith and the tragic death of a child, this book is best suited for readers over 13.
I chose Between Heaven & the Real World as my autobiography for February. Each month, I’m looking to read at least one book written by the author about their life. After reading Mary Beth’s memoir a few years ago, I was excited to receive this book as a gift from my husband last year! Tell me about the best memoir you’ve ready lately in the comments!
