New Release Tuesday – 1/31/23

It’s New Release Tuesday again! And reminder, as I posted about on Saturday, I’ll be including links to purchase these books from our Bookshop.org page instead of other national retailers. Bookshop and Libro.fm (audiobooks) purchases help support our independent bookstores with a portion of every purchase!

The Second You’re Single by Cara Tanamachi – releasing just in time for Valentines Day reads, this novel is touted as being about navigation of the most romantic month of the year when you don’t care for the holiday at all. I have a feeling this novel will be all romantic comedy and is Buzzfeed’s most anticipated romance novel of 2023. I honestly can’t wait to read it!

The Davenports by Krystal Marquis – This novel has shown up on every hot list of upcoming releases. I am in love with the Gilded Age and am looking forward to reading this coming of age tale of young black women in the 1910’s!

Maame by Jessica George – this debut novel is bound for the tops of the best lists in 2023. George spins a great tale about finding your own way out from under your parents’ wings, while honoring the traditions and cultures of the family. This is my February Book of the Month selection!

River Sing Me Home by Eleanor Shearer – This is another most anticipated book of 2023. So many new books this year are focused on the stories of People of Color in our country’s history. This haunting tale follows a mother looking for her children who were stolen and sold during slavery. I think mothers everywhere will be able to connect with the love of this main character and the lengths she goes to for her children.

True North Rising by Whit Fraser – this memoir recounts Fraser’s time with the Inuit and Dene in northern Canada. As a reporter, he has been up front and close to many historic events over his 5 decades of career. This book promises provocative looks at key players in the political and cultural movements of the area, including of his own wife – a politician in her own right.

Kids’ Books releasing today

Happy Easter Little Pookie by Sandra Boynton – The Little Pookie series is a favorite in our house! We own all of the books released thus far and I preordered this one on Saturday when Bookshop was having their 3rd anniversary giveaway. We love all things Boynton and, if you aren’t already familiar with her work, highly recommend you pick up any of her books for your young readers!

I Have a Question by Andrew Arnold – do you or your kid have anxiety about asking questions in group settings? This is a great book about finding courage to speak up. The author/illustrator uses humor to bring empathy to the discussion and give kids the ability to express themselves.

Sleepy Sheepy by Lucy Ruth Cummins and Pete Oswald – Do you have a Sheepy who doesn’t like to go to sleep? Then you’ll enjoy this story about Ma and Pa Sheepy working to get their Sleepy little one in bed when he’d rather be playing!

10 Kisses Before Bedtime by Danielle McLean and Ag Jatkowska – If Sleepy Sheepy doesn’t get your little one ready for bed, try this cute counting story. With tactile textures lots of rhymes, we see several families getting ready for bed by cleaning up their play area, brushing teeth, and, finally, getting a kiss before going to sleep.

Yellow Butterfly by Oleksandr Shatokhin – this is a very unique book to help children understand war in any language. Without words, this relies on a language every kid knows – pictures. Striking black and white images and visual metaphors. A portion of the proceeds will be directed to the Universal Reading Foundation which provides books to children in Ukraine.
