Lunar New Year Reads

Today marks Lunar New Year (aka: Chinese New Year) and the start of the Year of the Rabbit! The rabbit is the symbol of kindness, courage, and strength, and the moon. It is believed people born in the Year of the Rabbit will be goal-driven, with a great attention to detail.

If you’re looking to get in the mood for the Year of the Rabbit, below are some great options for your next book!

Daughters of the New Year by E.M. Tran – this multigenerational tale follows a family of strong female characters by moving backwards from present day New Orleans to the Saigon of their ancestors. Heavy with Vietnamese zodiac signs and meanings, this novel feels a bit personal for the Vietnamese award-winning writer.

Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan – seeing as how this is the year of the rabbit, which represents the moon, this feels like a fitting read. This novel is described as a romantic epic fantasy delivering a story about a young woman working to free her mother, the Moon Goddess, from the Celestial Emperor. I am looking forward to reading this soon!

Kitchen Chinese by Ann Mah – I love books about food, so this is right up my alley! Touted as reminiscent of Eat, Pray, Love, and sounding a bit like the memoir Apron Anxiety, the book follows a magazine writer as she moves from America to Bejing in a search for family and purpose. The Amazon reviews all seem to mention the food descriptions and the humor within the pages. Mah is a bestselling food and travel writer and brings those talents to this novel as well.

Unfortunately, I won’t be reading any of these today, as I’m struggling through Alexander Hamilton – I thought I had chosen a great book for my January historical biography read, but this one is taking some work to get through! Hope you are having a great New Year and have time to pick up one of these beautiful stories!
